If you are stuck in the crosshairs of Hurricane Sandy with no way to escape, here are a few things you should do to prepare for this epic storm.
Cover all windward windows with lumber. Plywood if possible.
Cut all overhanging limbs/branches away from your house to reduce flying debris and wind damage. (limbs can be stored inside to keep them dry in case you need firewood)
Fill your bathtubs with water so you can use buckets to flush your comodes.
Turn off your water supply valve in case the water supply becomes contaminated.
Charge all your communication devices.
Get fuel now, fill your vehicles and any gas cans that you can scrounge up.
If/when you lose power, be sure you have an alternate heat source. Candles in a coffee can will work in a pinch to warm hands and feet.
You can also make a small burner from an aluminum can and use isopropyl alcohol for fuel.
If you have lanterns, be sure to have mantles and fuel.
Camp stoves work great for cooking during power loss so get fuel for that too.
Buy batteries, lots of them. (A 9v battery and a piece of steel wool can quickly light a campfire)
Get lots of drinking water!
Fill any prescriptions you may need now. Be sure to have cold medicine and Tylenol just in case.
Test generators, radios and turn off your phone, save the battery in case you need it for an emergency call.
Stay away from windows during the storm.
Be sure to have ammo in case looters come to visit.
When the storm has passed, be sure to bundle up and go check on neighbors who may not have been prepared or may need help.
