Layman's Terms

I got asked about the situation with our government today and the person just doesn't understand what's going on. Here's the shortest simplest explanation possible:

The entire uproar is about "Raising the debt ceiling" which is just another term for raising the government credit limit. This is NOT about balancing the budget! If we "default" it is the same as you not having enough money to pay your bill and it goes on your credit report. That's what is happening..if they can't pay government employees their credit score will go down, raising their interest rate. Which will only cost US a bunch more money for nothing! We are just trying to get a loan approved, that's all!

Republicans who control Congress WANT a balanced budget amendment which would force the president to propose a balanced budget each year. They also are requiring that cuts to spending be listed specifically, not just a promise that spending will be cut. They want Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (they call these Entitlements) to all take slashing cuts...which is where I disagree with them.

Democrats control the Senate and the Presidency WANT to start taxing the wealthy and close loopholes so that big businesses also pay their fair share. They claim that they WILL make cuts to Entitlements but aren't willing to give specific instances but they are giving specific numbers.

Tea Party Republicans are taking a hard line approach and are refusing to cut taxes for the wealthy, which is why Congress doesn't have enough votes to pass a bill to the Senate.

Basically we are at a stalemate with neither side willing to give an inch. It would be in the citizens interest to do both. Tax the wealthy too, and stop wasteful spending! So far the working family has been shafted with the bill, giving up their children to fight unneeded wars and being taxed to death. The time to be bitching about it is NOW! Don't forget to vote.
